Brown Bears of Alaska: Lake Clark National Park
Trip Overview
Join us on the journey of a lifetime this summer to photograph the majestic Brown Bears of Coastal Alaska.  Coastal Brown Bears are massive with adult boars regularly reaching weights of 1200 pounds as they gorge on salmon, clams & sedges on the stunning coastline of the Alaskan Peninsula. Our trip takes us to the shores of Lake Clark National Park where we will spend several days at a beautiful beach-front camp in the wilderness amongst the great bears. Lake Clark National Park is remote and about 150 air miles from Anchorage. There are no roads leading into the park and the only access is by bush-plane!

On this 5-day Tour / Workshop we will be immersed in Brown Bear Photography from the beginning until the end. The bears are extremely active in June along the coast as they gorge on abundant sedges and dig for clams. The bears congregate in food-rich locations along the coast of the Alaskan Peninsula every year after snowmelt to fatten up after their long hibernation.

On this trip you can often photograph 30-40 bears in one area as they fish, play and wrestle. Cubs of the year are still tiny this time of year and our Eco-Lodge is in a prime location to view and photograph mother’s as they walk along the shoreline with up to three cubs. Incredible images of giant Alaskan mountain back-drops are possible along the coast of Lake Clark National Park.

We’ll spend three nights at a beautiful Eco-Lodge along the coast of Lake Clark to maximize our photography during peak lighting conditions. Being right there gives us excellent access to the action going on around the bay and you will be able to capture thousands of excellent Brown Bear Photographs in just a few short days. Fantastic, full-frame images are possible with lenses ranging from 300mm to 400mm. Aside from Brown Bears we may also have the opportunity to photograph other species such as Moose, Fox, Wolf, Bald Eagles, Sea Otters and Harbor Seals.

Ready for Lake Clark? Join us this summer for the most spectacular coastal Brown Bear Photography Experience in Alaska!

  • A Great Experience!

What a great experience! The trip was well-organized from start to finish. Great photography locations from deep jungle to beach to river boat to night hikes. The schedule kept us busy but never hectic, and the accommodations were super comfortable. Shout out to our guide Ben - we saw so much wildlife! I'd highly recommend a trip with them.

  • In October I traveled with BCJ to Joshua Tree Natl Park for their night sky photography trip. This was my third trip with BCJ and I just reserved another trip. I keep coming back to this company because of the great experiences I'm having. I love the small groups and excellent guides.

  • This was my first trip with Backcountry Journeys. It was excellent, and I have since booked two more trips. The itinerary, and the guides were excellent.
