Each year the summer monsoon brings with it the return of moisture to the high desert and rocky canyons of northern Arizona. During this time photogenic thunderstorms abound as they stretch across the region firing off localized sheets of rain, lighting and thunder.
Join Backcountry Journeys for an incredible seven day lodge-based photography tour of northern Arizona’s Grand Canyon country during the summer monsoon. This landscape photography oriented expedition will put you and your lens in front of the most iconic and spectacular locations Grand Canyon country has to offer, at a time when it is at its most electric and photogenic best.
Each day thunderstorms build towering cumulus clouds as they build, eventually bursting, sending sweeping rains, wind, and dust across the desert floor. These storms typically have high bases which can create long and forking bolts of lightning to occur. For photographers, these storms are truly the best in the world.
Our first day will take us to one of the most famous landscapes in the entire desert Southwest, Monument Valley. Here buttes, mesas, and other rock features dot the landscape in a most memorable and photogenic manner. This location is at the top of every landscape photographer’s list.
The next two days of this photography tour will be spent visiting locations around Page, Arizona. Famed locations like Horseshoe Bend and Lake Powell will be the foreground for compositions that’ll include dazzling desert storms and magnificent skies. We’ll time a visit to Antelope Canyon X, a quiet canyon offering everything neighboring Antelope Canyon has to offer, but without the overwhelming crowds.
Moving on from Page we will travel by vehicle to the Grand Canyon’s North Rim where we’ll spend the remainder of the trip in front of over 525 million years of colorful sedimentary rock that have been exposed by erosion. Your guide has worked in the region for years, and is well versed in it’s natural and cultural history. Thunderstorms are sure to be firing off with regularity as we’ve timed this photo tour to take place during peak Monsoon season. The Grand Canyon is one of the seven natural wonders of the world and will live up to its reputation as one of the most beautiful and awe-inspiring places on the planet.
Aside from the fun, you’ll experience with your fellow photographers you’ll leave this trip with a new understanding of the rich natural and cultural history, in addition to a highly expanded portfolio of excellent images and a wealth of memories. Join us today for the trip of a lifetime through Grand Canyon Country.
